Mike Makin is Assistant Secretary of Transport Market Reform and Technology Branch, in the Commonwealth Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications and the Arts, and also Head of the Commonwealth Office of Future Transport Technology. In this role, Mike leads a wide range of work developing and implementing land transport policy and regulatory reforms.
These include policy development to prepare Australia for the commercial deployment of automated vehicles and other transport innovations such as co-operative intelligent transport systems (C‑ITS), developing new laws that will govern automated vehicles operating on Australian roads, and overseeing the National Heavy Vehicle Charging Pilot (NHVCP), which is exploring fairer ways to fund Australia's roads through testing alternative ways to charge heavy vehicles for their road usage. Mike also oversees the Secretariat to Infrastructure and Transport Ministers meetings (ITMM) Prior to this, Mike was Assistant Secretary of News and Media Industry Branch in the Department of Communications and the Arts, and General Manager of Water Resource Planning at the Murray-Darling Basin Authority.
Mike holds a Master of Commerce from Deakin University and a Bachelor of Engineering from RMIT.
